The artwork by Barry Jackson and packaging of “Wasteland” played a significant role in conveying the game’s bleak and desolate atmosphere. The original box art features a dramatic, painted scene of a desert landscape dominated by a large, menacing skull, setting the tone for the game’s harsh, survivalist theme. This imagery was complemented by muted, earthy tones that mirrored the game’s post-apocalyptic setting, effectively capturing the essence of a civilization in ruins.
The packaging also included detailed backstories and lore, enhancing the immersive experience. Interplay ensured that the packaging not only served as a container but also as an extension of the game’s narrative, adding depth and context to the virtual world the players were about to enter. The US version of the game was one of the last ones in the EA gatefold packaging style.
